Syrian refugee crisis
The start of it all
Even before the war had begun, people were already having issues with the high unemployment rates, political instability, lack of political freedom and large amounts of corruption.
This all began to happen once President Bashar al-Assad, who succeeded after his father Hafez, who died in 2000
Pro-democracy operations began to appear in March of 2011 which commenced the "Arab Spring" in neighbouring countries.
Arab Spring --> Anti-government protests and armed rebellions which spread along Syria and bordering countries
The government did everything in their power such as deadly forces to hold back these opinions that were negatively impacting the government.
All of this rapidly spread as opposition supporters began to arm forces in order to
- Defend themselves
- Rid their areas of security forces
