Tropical Rainforest
Soil
The soil contains little to no nutrients, as the rain washes them away.
-
Climate
They are found near the equator and therefore have a hot climate, with the temperature being around 20-28
-
-
-
Plants
Trees also have smooth bark to allow the rainwater to run down it just like the drip tips, so that they do not become damaged.
The plants have large waxy leaves and drip tips. This allows the water to slide of the leaves, so that the leaves don't get damaged by the rain.
-
Lianas - Is a type of plant that 'Hitchhikes' up other trees to save nutrients and reach the top of the canopy (to get more sunlight) with the most efficient use of nutrients.
-
As most of the trees grow high to get more sunlight they need stronger roots. Buttress roots, are very large and shallow and allow the trees to grow larger and taller.
-
Epiphytes - Are another type of plant that grows on tree trunks high up in the canopy to get the most sunlight as possible. They receive their nutrients from the sunlight and the air (NOT the soil).
-
Animals
Animals have also learned the ability to swim (for example the Jaguar)so that they can e.g hunt fish or cross rivers
-
Anther adaptation rainforest animals may inhibit is webbed feet than can either help them glide/fly in the air or for amphibious animals it can help them swim through the water.
Toucan - The Toucan has a strong, large and long beak so that it can cut branches and fruit.
-
Many animals have adapted to have stronger limbs, to enable them to climb trees and jump from tree to tree. For example the Spider Monkey
-
Other animals for example the Sloth use camouflage, as well making slow movements to hide away from potential predators.

Deciduous Forests
An example of a deciduous forest is the New Forest in Hampshire.
Deciduous forests have a temperate maritime weather, this means that it has above average precipitation (rain). Deciduous forests are located between 40 and 60 degrees North and South of the equator. They have 4 layer:
- Canopy
- Sub-canopy
- Herb
- Ground
The animals within deciduous forests include:
- Foxes
- Owls
- Mice
- Snakes (Adders)
- Small birds, such as Robin
