30 year old single mother came to the clinic with her 2 years old daughter…
30 year old single mother came to the clinic with her 2 years old daughter Lana.
Present complain: inability of her child to stand or walk until now.
delayed motor development
The child was born of the 35th week if gestation via cesarean section
Due to a large mass located on her lower back (teratoma/cyst due to neural tube defect).
An abnormal blood test was taken at week 14 and a specimen from the fluid around the baby showed same results.
Abdominal ultrasound showed a NTD in spinal cord of her child.
Chromosomal and gene studies for the baby showed no abnormalities.
Medical history of mother
she is epileptic (convulsions/seizures)
she was on depakene before getting pregnant
Physical examination of Lana
Well nourished
Head circumference is 55 cm
Enlarged head
The mass is located in the lumbo-sacral area
Cystic lesion
The mass looks opaque, not covered by skin & 15 cm in diameter
Neurological examination
lower limbs showed hypotonia
loss of motor innervation
loss of sensation in both inner thighs
Ultrasound examination
meninges + spinal cord-meningomyelocele
