Automobiles, bridges, and bicycles have in common, that they are made partly of steel.
Before de Civil War, iron was used for many things. Steel is made from iron with other metals added. But steel is stronger and lasts longer than iron.

The immigrants worked hard and were able to take on the ways of their new country
Immigrants from one country often formed groups to help new arrivals find work and places to live. There weren´t enought open places in the poor parts of the city.
Many children didn´t get a chance to play at all. They had to work long hours in factories. Sometimes they made only 25 cents a day.The factories were often terrible place to work. Factories were dangerous and unhealty
Workers got together and formed labor unions. Labor unions are groups of workers who join together to protect their jobs and to improve working.conditions.
If one worker refused to work, a factory owner would just fire the worker.
Unions did this by stiking or refusing to work, until changes were made.
Factories helped cities grow. So did the arrival of immigrants. An immigrant is a person who leaves one country to live in another country, they came from countries in Europe such as Italy, Grece, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, and Russia.
Some immigrants came only to work and save money. They left to get away from cruel an unfair laws. They left to start a new life.
People had to learn new skills to get jobs
