Evaluate research methods used to study the influence of globalization on behavior.
Introduction
Importance of the Question
Definition of globalization: increased inter-national exchanges of goods, services, information. and people. Can lead to an interaction between local and foreign/global influences on behavior
Humans are social being. This means that they strive to interact with one another. Aspects of cultures are shared including traditions and norms --> socialization
Psychologists use different research methods because of various ethical considerations. It also gives them opportunities to investigate different kinds of behaviors
The goal of psychology is to prove people's lives. We are always interacting with one another and it could be improved
Outline
Survey/questionnaire (attitudes on Muslims)
Case Study (plane crash)
Interviews (Delhi and Shanghai)
Quasi Experiment (introduction to tv)
Body Paragraph 1
Description of the study: aim, sample (composition and size), procedure, results
Connection to globalization: the introduction of other cultures exposes children to other ways to interaction, leading to behavior deemed "inappropriate" because it is considered foreign
Illustration of the process of enculturation and the importance of cultural groups and their influence
Limitations: used a small range of ages (would the findings be different if the children we exposed to different cultures at earlier ages?), compared children who live in eastern societies (could be different in western ones), investigated children and parents from disadvantaged urban areas (could be different in suburban/rural areas because they might have more access to interactions with other cultures through media)
Definition of socialization
Body Paragraph 2
Description of the study: aim, sample (composition and size), procedure, results
Connection to globalization: globalization increases the intergroup contact because there is more access to other cultures. the results show that globalization increases positive attitudes toward different cultures
Explain how it can be applied to the attitudes to religious minorities
Limitations: gave questionnaires to students from two countries in the same general region (unclear if it would be the same in different countries in different regions), might have skewed results because participants could be more likely to put what they think the researchers are looking for
Definition of Intergroup Contact Theory and the benefits to reduce prejudice
Body Paragraph 3
Description of the study: aim, sample (composition and size), procedure, results
Connection to globalization: is an example of how interaction between people from different cultures (intergroup contact) can be negative and have consequences. this research method does not help illustrate how the influence of globalization because it gives only one example (not really a reflection of what happens normally)
Explain Power Distance and the behavior that is associated with high and low Power Distance
Limitations: is only one example of this event (may not be a reflection of the things that would happen in real life), the researchers could not control all the potential factors that could influence the data (there are other things that could have changed the data; unclear if the results are because of contrasting cultural dimensions)
Definition of culture (Hofstede) and outline the different dimensions
Body Paragraph 4
Description of the study: aim, sample (composition and size), procedure, results
Connection to globalization: the participants in this experiment were not always to exposed to other cultures through globalization. obtaining the results before and after the introduction of western tv give more of an understanding about the influence it has on people
Outline the process of acculturation using Berry's model
Limitations: small sample size (makes the findings less credible; not enough data to triangulate), the results are self-reported (the participants could give answers to please the researchers)
Define acculturation and the differences between enculturation
Conclusion
Surveys/questionnaires make it easier for participants to not be as honest with their answers, skewing the data
Interviews allow participants to feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with the researchers --> leads to more honest responses
Case studies are not very good at understanding globalization on a large scale (only looks at one example), meaning that it does not give that much information, despite the in depth investigation
Quasi Experiments give the researchers more of a chance of manipulating some of the variables, but still being conducted in the actual environment. this gives more of an example of how things actual play out --> more accurate
Investigating and understanding globalization and its influence is very important in understanding humans and ho they interact with one another
