Week 8
Understanding by Design
UBD is a way of thinking purposefully about curricular planning, not a rigid program or prescriptive recipe.
Primary goal: developing and deepening student understanding through “big ideas and transfer of learning”
Students autonomously make sense of their learning through authentic performance (explain, interpret, apply, shift perspective, empathize, self-assess)
Stage 1
Desired Results
-
Framed in terms of important concepts, issues, themes, strategies, etc.
“Transfer” the ultimate desired accomplishment: what, in the end, should students be able to do with all this content, on their own, if all the related units are successful?
Stage 2
Assesment Evidence
-
Explain, Interpret,Apply,Perspective,Empathy,Self-Understanding
Goal,Role,Audience,Situation,Performance,Standards
Stage 3
Learning Plan
“aligned learning activities”: what we teach and how we teach it follows logically from the STAGE 1 goals.
Where, Hook, Equip and Experience, Rethink, Evaluate, Tailor, Organize
Students must be given opportunities to draw inferences and make generalizations themselves. “Understanding” has to be constructed.
