Phlebotomy Ch.15: Lecture 2
Semen Specimens
determines presence of viable sperm
assess fertility
assess the effectiveness of a vasectomy
serve as a forensic specimen from rape case; follow chain of custody
pt should avoid ejaculation for 3 days prior and then ejaculatye into sterile container
time of collection and volume must be document for accurate testing
sample should be collected on site or kept warm and delivered to lab within 30 min of collection
Throat Culture
most often used to culture/screen for strept. A
care must be taken NOT to touch tongue or inside mouth during collection
after collection the ampule containing transport media is broken to keep cotton swab moist until testing
some facilities use sterile container with 2 swabs that are collected at the same time; one for rapid strep screen leaving the other as back-up
if have child that won't open their mouths- pinch nose and he will open mouth to breath giving you chance to collect
wear mask and face shield in case pt coughs and prevent inhalation of organisms that might be present
Nasopharyngeal (NP) Culture
a bendable wire with mini cotton tip is inserted into nostril to reach back of the nasopharynx to collect mucus sample
used to test for whooping cough, diphtheria, pneumonia, meningitis, or other upper respiratory infec.
Sweat Electrolyte (SE) Specimen
collected to screen for elevated sweat chloride in a suspected pt with cystic fibrosis
iontophoretic pilocarpine test uses a weak electric current to collect sweat on pre weighted sterile filter paper; paper analyzed for its chloride content
special training required before phleb. can do test most often done on thigh of infants; special care taken when handling filter paper so not to contam. it with sweat from YOUR hands
Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)
spinal tap, collects fluid by inserting needle into spinal cord to screen for meningitis
is usually clear but will be cloudy if bacteria or wbc's are present indicating infection.
