6.5 meat and fish production ((Solutions, Protect mangrove forests and…
6.5 meat and fish production
Feedlots: outdoor intense feeding
factory farms; huge buildings of crowded pens and cages
the green evolution = more feed ( no pasture needed )
Antibiotics: cramming so many animals together would otherwise almost certainly wipe out entire stocks due to disease
in feedlots and factory farms, animals are fed grain, soybeans, fishmeal, or fish oil and some of this feed is doctores with growth hormones and antibiotics to accelerate livestock growth.
Water consumption: huge amounts of water are used to irrigate the crops that feed livestock
water pollution: livestock wastes is washed away straight into waterways-eutrophication and pollution due to antibiotics, hormones and pesticides.
Climate change: meat production- more greenhouse gases than all of worlds vehicles combined.
Problems with fisheries:
overexploitation: species like tuna and cod are endangered
many fish are contaminated with toxins like heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins
a third of all fish caught in oceans is used to make fishmeal/ fish oil to feed farmed fish and livestock
Biodiversity loss: conversion of grass lands, forests, and wetlands to crops or rangelands.
Soil: erosion, loss of fertility, salinization, water logging and desertification
Water: aquifer depletion, increased runoff, sediment pollution, and flooding from cleared land
Air pollution: emissions of greenhouse gases CO2 from fossil fuel use N20 from inorganic fertilizers use and methane from cattle
Human health: nitrates in drinking water, pesticide residues in water, food and air.
Solutions
Protect mangrove forests and estuaries
improve management of wastes
reduce escape of aquaculture species into the wild
set up self-sustaining polyaquaculture systems that combine aquatic plants, fish and shellfish
Certify sustainable forms of aquaculture
Fishery: is a concentration of a particular aquatic species suitable for commercial harvesting in a given ocean area or inland body of water
Aquaculture or fish farming is the practice of raising fish in freshwater, lakes, reservoirs, and rice paddies, and in underwater cages in coastal and deeper ocean waters.
Industrialized meat production
Industrialized meat production harms the environment
Fisheries and aquaculture can harm aquatic ecosystems
Natural capital degragation
Produce and consume fish and shellfish product more sustainably
Industrialized fish and shellfish production
