        Advocated for Vietnamese independence at the end of WWI. He was a Vietnamese nationalist and supported Woodrow Wilson's idea of self-determination. If you remember back to Wilson's 14 points, he called for self-determination of countries and an end to colonies. France and England were all for this as long as everyone else had to stop, but they could keep their colonies and Ho Chi Minh was ignored. at the Paris Peace Conference. During WW2, Japan took control of the French colony of Indochina. Ho Chi Minh wrote the US a letter asking for American assistance in gaining Vietnamese freedom. At the time the US was actually helping support Vietnam in resisting Japanese rule.
        After the war, France re-emerges to try and colonize again. Ho Chi Minh turns to Soviet Union and China to help gain independence.. US aiding France paying up to 3/4 of the money France needed to spend.
        The Communist party under the leadership of Ho Chi Minh becomes associated with the fight for Independence from foreign rule: Viet Minh 1945: Independence declared: Democratic Republic of Vietnam formed. Ho Chi Minh writes a declaration and copies the first line of the Dec. of Independence. France and US do not recognize this independence. ,
