Soldering and Joining Techniques
Joining Process
Types
Non-permanent
Mechanical fastening
Solid state
Fusion welding
Liquid /Solid joining
Factors
Design of the joint
Joint quality
Color of solder alloy
By Soldering
Soft soldering Tempt. < 450 c
Hard soldering Tempt. > 450 c
Brazing Temperature higher than Hard Soldering
Joint surface preparation and cleaning
Oil and grease should be remove using suitable solvent
Oxide flim and dirt can be remove by 10% sulphuric acid
If soldering done at bench, the part will be heated in the air
Problems :cause surface oxidation
Solution :Flux provide a protective surface cover preventing futher oxidation
Applications of solder to joint
Methods of applications include:
Placing paillons with a thin coating of borax on top of the joint gap applying heat until the solder flows into the joint from one side
Applying dust by filling down solder. The dust maybe mixed with flux and placed on the joint with a flattened piece of wire.
Heat until flux is clear and flows.
Place the amont of solder paste from the dispenser on one side of joint gap.
Sweat soldering is used for joining larger flat surfsce such as hinges and brooch pins
Multi-step soldering
Includei
Complex jewelry assemblies may contain a number of solder joints.
Problems: The first joint to be made may remelt with further soldering operations on the same piece
The terms extra easy ,easy ,medium, hard and extra hard describe color and carat.
Extra hard high temtp. and flow is required.
Joint configuration
The weakest is right angle join.
Number of techniques increase by reducing stress and increase area
Retain some thickness and external shape
In jewellry have to retain their aesthetic appeal, joining is the secondaries important.
Soldering process
Solder alloys have to be macth
Colors
Caratage
Melting range
Mechanical properties
Have to cut in small pieces and recommend to kept in flux solution
Paillons
Put between gap and melting flows
Jogging and fixuring
Held the individual part in certain position so it donot moving during the processes.
Jeweller donot have enough hand to held so they use wire to tied it together or jig and fixure board
