Whats is?
A proportion is a name we give to a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two ways:
two equal fractions a:b=c:d
Or a/b=c/d
When two ratios are equal, then the cross products of the ratios are equal.
Definition
A ratio is a relationship between two numbers (usually involving some kind of measurement). For example, when people drive, they travel at a certain speed. We usually refer to that speed as miles per hour. That's a ratio because it's a relationship between distance and time.
Ratios can be shown in different ways:
using the ":" to separate example values
using the "/" to separate one value from the total
as a decimal, after dividing one value by the total
as a percentage, after dividing one value by the total
What is?
In mathematics, a rate is the ratio between two related quantities in different units. If the denominator of the ratio is expressed as a single unit of one of these quantities, and if it is assumed that this quantity can be changed systematically (i.e., is an independent variable), then the numerator of the ratio expresses the corresponding rate of change in the other (dependent) variable.
Definition
Equivalent ratios (which are, in effect, equivalent fractions) are two ratios that express the same relationship between numbers. We can create equivalent ratios by multiplying or dividing both the numerator and denominator of a given ratio by the same number
