Cell membrane
It separates the material outside the cell, extracellular. Also transport fluids into and out of the cell and maintains the integrity of a cell.

Pasteur said, "Cells come only from pre-existing cells". He use some knobs with curved neck and boiling broth of meat, since there was no air, nothing was generated, but when he cut the neck, life begin.
Robert Remark, discovered cells divisions and the existence of plasma membrane. He found it looking at the blood stream under the microscope.
Theodor Schwann said that all the animals are composed of cells and cell product. Knowing that plants had cells, he investigate animals, there, he found that they also are composed of cells.

Van Leeuwenhoek identify animalcules (microscopic animal). He was looking water through the microscope, he saw something moving, something alive.
The microscope is definitely one of the most important tools used to analyze organism that are imperceptible to the eye. Thanks to the microscope, today we know that all organism are made up of cells.
