PREHISTORY
PALAEOLITHIC
- MEANS: "Old Stone Age". Peolpe only made simple tools from STONE
- STARTS with the appearance of human beings (Aprox. 5Millions years ago)
- ENDS with the Start of FARMING

LIFE
- They lived in TRIBES
- Many people DIED YOUNG. Life was very hard
(Cold temperatures, hunger, diseases or injuries)
- They SHARE JOBS: some hunted, others gathered, others made tools:
-- From STONE: they made Knives, axes and arroheads
-- From Animal BONES: they made harpoons, spears and needles
FOOD
- They ate what they FOUND in NATURE(fruit, roots),
- They FISHED (fish and shellfish)
- They HUNTED (reindeer, bison, lizards)
- The ate RAW food until they discovered FIRE,
so they coud cook.
- ANIMALS provided FOOD to eat, BONES to make tools and SKINS for clothes and huts.
- They LIVED near rivers and lakes so they could fish, collect plants and have water. When they ran out of food they moved on.
NEOLITHIC
- MEANS: "New Stone Age" (They made tools from stone)
- Period of Prehistory after Palaeolithic
- About 10.000 years ago
- They discovered how plants grow from SEEDS. They grew Wheat and Barley. Later other plants
- They build enclosures to keep animals in (goats, sheeps and oxen) so they didn´t have to hunt animals for food.
FIRST VILLAGES
- People were now SEDENTARY (they built Villages to live permanently and to take care of land an animals
- Villages were located near RIVERS to have water.
.- Villages were surrounded by walls or fences (to defend them from an attack)
- People specialized in certain jobs: some became FARMERS, others became CRAFTSMEN
FIRST CRAFTSMEN
- They made TOOLS from stone.
- They learned to make POLISHED STONE tools (better than Palaeolithic tools)
- They made tools to help with FARMING:
-- HOES to turn the soil
-- SICKLES to cut crops
-- HAND MILLS to mill the wheat and barly ino FLOUR
OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

POTTERY
Made by modelling clay by hand and then baking it on a fire
- They made pots to keep food and to cook with.
- They made plates and bowls

- First monuments using large stones
(called Megaliths).
- Type of Megalithic Monuments:
MENHIRS
Large, upright, standing stones.
Used for religious purposes
DOLMENS
Several upright, standing stones that support a large, flat, horizontal stone.
They were burial monuments
