Earth and Space Resources
The Earth has 4 Spheres
all of earth's resources are extracted from the four spheres
two categories resources can be labelled as
Nonrenewable Energy Sources
are resources that has a finite supply and is being used more quickly than can be replaced.

#
Natural Gas, found in the ground and burned. Used for heating and cooking.
Coal, found in mines and burned. Used in manufacturing
fossil fuels
come from remains of organisms that have been buried under the earth for millions of years.
Oil, found underground and burned. Used as a fuel source ie. petrol
Minerals
that are found in the earth are all formed by geological processes.
metal ores
are a type of mineral that can be found in the earths crust. These include metals such as aluminium and iron
Renewable Energy Sources
are resources that are either infinite or are being replaced more quickly than can be used
Wind Power,
energy from wind to power turbines
Hydroelectric
, energy from the running of water. Utilised through water wheels or dams
Solar Power (Light from the sun)
, harnessed through solar panels. Light energy form the sun can be converted into electric energy.
Stage 2 students learn that the sun is a renewable source of energy
There are many issues surrounding the exploitation and uses of these resources, mainly concerning the conservation and impact of the environmental
There is an ethical dilemma to use fossil fuels due to their harmful impact on the environment through the creation of pollutants in the air
Stage 5 students can understand the different ethics of cultures and understand the international agreements reached on resource use
There is a social issue in whether to allow fossil fuel mining to continue because although it does allow electricity to remain cheap, it has been linked to harming the environment
There is also lots of jobs in the fossil fuel industry which would lead to mass unemployment if they were shut down
The financial issues of resources management is wholly dependent on whether cheap power is worth the risk of destroying environments
Recycling is a great way of converting old and use materials to make new materials. This has been shown to greatly decrease environmental degradation
recycling is a strategy to re use materials so that it is not wasted. Recycling consists of reusing items that could be considered both renewable and non-renewable.
recyclable items can be extracted from all spheres of the earth
an example of a non renewable item that is recycled would be aluminium cans.
#
the point of recycling non-renewable resources is so that more resources do not need to be extracted and therefore more energy wasted. This helps the environment and allows us to reduce the time a resource would be fully used up
Stage 3 students learn that some resources are more sustainable than others and the impact they create
Stage 5 students can research the relevant findings on the changing environment and be able to comprehend the research
Primary students learn about human involvement and extraction of resources from the surface and atmosphere
atmosphere: (the air and sky above us)
All the gasses that surround the earth makes up the atmosphere. The atmosphere is split into different zones/levels.
wind can be harnessed from the atmosphere by windmills to generate electricity
#
lithosphere: (the land):
this includes all of the earths rocks, the mantle and the crust of the earth
metal ores and fossil fuels are located within the land and need specific strategies to be extracted. These materials are used for a wide variety of things such as jewellery, food necessities, or cars
#
biosphere: (where organisms live)
all of the flora and fauna and one celled organisms all reside in this sphere. The biosphere can be broken down to biomes in which organisms of similar nature live, such as the rain forest, or the desert.
resources can be taken from trees and dead animals. these can be used to create materials and items such as paper, clothes and fabric
hydrosphere: (the water)
All bodies of water on earth are categorised as a part of the hydrosphere, lakes, oceans, seas.
the movement of water through water wheels can also be used to generate electricity
#
Stage 5 students can make predictions based on data about the different spheres of the Earth
Can make connections between the spheres and the carbon cycle
