Hearing
Middle Ear
ossicular chain
malleus: largest of ossicles, provide attachment with tympanic membrane
incus: provides intermediate link, saddle joint is the connection
stapes/stirrup: transmit sound from eardrum to oval wind, ball & socket type articulation with incus
Tympanic Muscles (smallest, stiffen middle ear for protection)

Landmarks
-
-
Eustachian tube (auditory tube): between pharynx and middle ear; aeration of middle ear; equalize pressure- atmospheric & middle ear
Nerve passages
-
chorda tympani: branch of facial nerve, from taste bud to carry information to brain
tympanic nerve: branch of glosspharyngeal nerve, for sense and secretory
Cochlea of Inner Ear
Modiolus: central axis, finely perforated (spongy) bone
Spinal lamina
scala vestibuli: connect with middle ear thorough oval window, external to the membranous labyrinth, filled with perilymph
scala media/cochlea duct: inside membranous labyrinth, filled with endolymph, houses sensory apparatus
-
Basilar membrane: floor of scala media, separate it with scala tympani, houses Organ of Corti
scala tympani: connect with middle ear through round window, external to membranous labyrinth, filled with perilymph
Helicotrema: at apex, where scala vestibuli & tympani meet
-
Outer Ear
The Pinna (auricle)
-
landmarks: helix, auricular tubercle, concha
-
-
Inner Ear
The Bony Labyrinth
bony, outer wall of inner ear; located in temporal bone; epithelial line secrets perilymph; lateral wall is oval window; vestibular aqueduct
3 osseous parts
vestibule: central, entrance to inner ear
-
-
membranous labyrinth: in bony labyrinth, separate by perilymph, has receptor cells for hearing & equilibrium
