Female (1)
Fertilization
Process
Sperm in female tract
Moved through m contractions
Isthmus of oviduct (reservoir, severel days)
Ampulla= fertilisation
Sperm Reactions
Capacitation: membranes altered, increases tail motility, sperm metabolism
Acrosome reaction: enzymes in acrosome activated, can penetrate zona pellucida
-
After Fertilisation
Embryo starts to divide (stimulus= Ca, enzymes, hormones)
-
-
-
Placentation
-
Implications
Ease of transfer of immunoglobulins, drugs etc (E.g. horses- Diffuse, if different blood types foal dies when drinks colostrum)
Indications of premature placental separation (horses whole uterus involved, cattle- cotyledonary, only patches)

Endocrinology
Classes of follicles
- Primordial: oocyte without zona pellucida, one cell layer
- Committed: zona pellucida, granulosa and theca cells, local regulation of growth, develop receptors for FSH and LH but indep.
- Gonadotrophin responsive: fluid-filled atrium, granulosa cells prolif. become sensitive to FSH
WAVES DEVELOP DUE TO THIS STAGE
- Gonadotrophin-dependent: req FSH, oestradiol prod, LH receptors appear
- Ovulatory= granulosa cells with lots of FSH and LH receptors. lots of oestradial. can ovulate
WHY single ovulation= dominant follicle gets ahead and produces inhibin and oestrogen= negative feedback on FHS (no other follicles can develop)
Hormonal cycle of a Cow
FSH
2-3 waves (with GnRH waves)
Make follicle respond= need receptors
Inhibit other follicles through local feedback
-
LH
Spike responding to oestrogen= OVULATION
req for follicles to grow (during middle of cycle after follicle starts to grow)
Progesterone
From CL
negative feedback on brain= stopping GnRH
3/4 through cycle= pregnant= prog, IF NOT= PG released, CL gone, prog stops= luteolysis...

Disease
Early Embryo death
- Before maternal recognition of preg= normal cycle length
- After= pprolonged oestrous cycle e.g. Sheep= day 12, cow= day 15
