crime and punishment - the role of religion was the main reason for a change in accusations of witchcraft in early modern England
Agree
Religious beliefs
In this time period religious beliefs were very important to everyone, so most followed what the bible said, which explained how witches went against God as they could 'summon evil spirits'.
Witchcraft gave an explanation for anything mysterious that happened so people could blame it on that.
religious differences were increased during the civil war. so many puritans believed witchcraft was used by royalist (of some were catholic). this also resulted in tension increases that the devil was at work, which led to an increase in witchcraft accusations.

Mathew Hopkins
-
he went on witch hunts to find witches so they could be prosecuted, each which he prosecuted he received money. this led to around 300 investigated and 120 of these executed.
Mathew used torture to extract information and confessions, which often included names of other witches for him to investigate.

witch hunts
This was when people actively tried to discover witches. This led to hundred of women and men(mostly clergymen) being investigated.those convicted were usually hanged.

Once accused of being a witch and investigated it was nearly impossible to not get convicted and executed and the evidence that shown you were a witch went against science.
such as; if the accused if pricked with a need they do not bleed and unusual marks on the accused (but most people had birth marks). this made it impossible to not be convicted so this led to a large increase in those executed or accused for being a witch.
