Characters
Heather
Heather is the new girl in town from Ohio. She is Melinda's only friend because she doesn't know exactly why Melinda is hated so she is okay with her. Heather wants to get into a lot of groups but Melinda doesn't. Later on Heather joins the Martha's.
Melinda
Melinda is the protagonist of the story. Everyone hates her for what she did, she called the cops at a party, but nobody knows her reasons. She is an outcast. She only has one friend, the new girl, Heather.
Rachel
Rachel is Melinda's ex best friend, now known as Melinda's enemy. Her and Melinda had been best friends for years but after what happened at the party, Rachel has been giving Melinda dirty looks, and she hates her. It is still not completely apparent why Rachel hates her that much but it's bad.
Nicole
Nicole is an athlete. She doesn't care who judges her and she is very competitive especially in sports. Nicole is kind of and acquaintance to Melinda.
Figurative Language
"I got my eye on you." This is a metaphor on pg. 7, and it means that they will be watching what you are doing to make sure you aren't doing anything bad.
" Principle Principle pauses with a look like Daffy Duck's when Bug's pulling a fast one" This is a simile on pg. 17, and it means that he made a weird/ mad face.
"Chattering a million miles an hour." is a hyperbole that can be found on pg. 24, it means that the girl talks extremely fast while they walk down the halls.
"I have seen new notebooks, a skirt I hate and a stomach ache." is a personification that may be found on pg. 3. It shows how at even the beginning of the school year she is extremely negative. It foreshadows how she will act for the rest of the year.
Quotes
"The first ten lies they tell you in high school: 1. We are here to help you " In this quote Melinda talks about how High school lies to you, the first lie is that they are there for you. This is important because she knows that nobody has helped her in the past and nothing will change.
"If there is anyone in this entire galaxy I am dying to tell what happened, It's Rachel. My throat burns." This is one of Melinda's quotes that she says when Rachel passes by her and gives her a dirty look. It shows how she still cares about Rachel's friendship and she regrets what she did.
"It's easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All the crap you hear on TV about communication and expressing your feelings is a lie. Nobody wants to hear what you have to say." In this quote Melinda talks about how it is just so much easier to keep your mouth shut and stay quiet instead of releasing your inner demons. This is important because it is one of the reasons why she doesn't stand up for herself, it's easier and less dramatic.
"It's as if they operate in two realities simultaneously." Melinda talks about how the popular girls seem as if they live two different lives, one where they are perfect and beautiful and innocent then the other where they are crazy are not innocent at all, where they do things with the high school football boys that no woman their age should be doing. Melinda realizes how the most sex-crazed women are also the ones who are loved most by everyone because of them being two-faced.
Conflict
" The girl pokes me harder. 'Aren't you the one who called the cops at Kyle Rodger's party at the end of the summer?" I chose this as my second conflict because it causes Heather to know why everyone hates Mel, yet she doesn't do much about it. I also realized that it irritated Mel a bit because she was just trying ti be invisible and hang out with her friend without problems. Pg 27.
"Her eyes meet mine for a second, 'I hate you,' she mouths silently. She turns back to me and laughs with her friends." I chose this as my first conflict because it shows how even her ex best friend completely hates her for what she had done and it shows how Mel is an outcast. Pg. 5
"Gym should be illegal. It's humiliating. My gym locker is closest to the door, which means I have to change my clothes in the bathroom stall." I chose this as my third conflict because Mel is super uncomfortable with having her locker there. It can also cause her humiliation later on because someone may walk in and be mean to her just because she is standing right in front of her locker, at the door. Mel is already always on he lookout trying not to get criticized so the locker being so close to the door, may cause her to be noticed and criticized more.
These will be the years you look back on fondly.
