PARTS OF SPEECH
INTERJECTIONS
= words that expresses strong feeling or emotion. Exp: Aw! Oh! Phew! Well! Yea! Bravo! Gosh! Eh! Gee!, etc.
ADJECTIVES
= always describe a noun. It answers the questions What? Which? How many? How much? Exp: Carrie read an
interesting
story. (what kind of story?); The
recent
article has that information. (which article?
PREPOSITIONS
= words that show the relationship between a noun and another word in the sentence. Exp: Under, down, around, toward, behind, besides, inside, near, over, in, by, until, within, up, without, etc.
ADVERBS
= words that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Many adverbs end in -ly (quickly, easily, etc). Adverbs answer Where? When? How? Frequency. Other examples that don't end in -ly: again, always, just, nowhere, seldom, almost, alone, even, never, very, etc.
CONJUCTIONS
= connect word or group of words.
Coordinating Conjunction
: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS).
Correlative Conjunctions
: Both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also, whether/or.
PRONOUNS
= refer to a noun.
NOUNS
= refer to name of a
person
(farmer, mechanic, father, Professor Haskins),
places
(ocean, Canada,porch, Spain),
things
(scissors, giraffe, pen, smiles), or
ideas
(love, inspiration, courage, anxiety).
VERBS
Linking Verbs
: the most common linking verbs are the forms of to be. If a word can be replaced by to be; it is a linking verb. Exp: He
appears
tired -> He
is
tired.
Helping Verbs
: It is usually separated from the main verb. the common helping verbs are am, is, are, was, were, and modals.

Action Verbs
: tells what action a subject is performing.
Exp: eat, run, sleep, delivered, bowled, help, etc.
Proper Noun
= nouns begin with capital letter. Exp: Chicago, Mr. Richard Turner, Parangtritis beach.
Common Noun
= person, place, or thing. Exp: basketball, video. coin, woman
Reflexive Pronoun
: with ending -self or -selves. Exp: yourself, myself, ourselves, etc
Interrogative Pronoun
: which, who, whom, whose.
Personal Pronoun
: I, my, mine, me, you, your, yours, he, his, him, she, her, hers, it, its, we, our, us, you, your, they, their, them
Demonstrative Pronoun
: this, that, these, those.
Indefinite Pronoun
: all, another, any, anybody, anyone, everyone, everything, more, most, much, etc
