practitioners and researchers have increasingly begun to emphasize on fundamental necessity of considering culture when understanding psychology, as behavior is best understood in the context of one's environment.

most research has been conducted in European American countries. only handful studies that have been examined the association between marital adjustment and psychological distress
marital adjustment among partners when being compared between two different classes of socioeconomic status might have a difference findings as it involves different environment as well.
Aim of the research
to examine the association between marital adjustment and psychological distress in married adult in Japan (Li, Robustelli & Whisman, 2016).
to examine the relationship between differentiation of self and couple adjustment
how young couples from middle and lower class in Colombo make an adjustment within the first five years of marriage
Research method?
total of 460 households were selected in this study. Couples must have been married within the period of 5 years from middle and lower class and all together, 20 couples fulfilled the requirements of the study.
Questionnaire being used:
1) Dyadic Adjustment Scale
respondents were selected within three countries comprising of United States, Spain and Italy.
two questionnaires have been used
1) The Differentiation of Self Inventory- Revised
2) The Dyadic Adjustment Scale
participants were drawn from the Midlife Development in Japan (MIDJA), the sample included 716 married participants ranging from 30-79 years.

2) Positive and Negative Marital Adjustment
3) Positive and negative family and friend relationship quality

Poor marital adjustment can contribute to psychological distress, as it can serve as a source of chronic stress (Whisman & Baucom, 2012)
A well adjusted marriage may be defined as a union in which husband and wife are in agreement on the major issues of marriage such as handling finances and dealing with in-laws (Ekanaye, 2016)
differentiation of self might relate differently to relationship adjustment in collectivistic culture or may not predict dyadic functioning at all.
Individuals who develop higher levels of differentiation have a solid sense of who the are, are able to distinguish between thoughts and feelings, are more likely to behave even when pressured by others(Rodriguez- Gonzalez, Lampis, Murdock, Scheweer-Collins & Lyons (2020)
