trigeminal pathway
- 1st axons frm the trigeminal ganglion
enter the brain stem
at the pons
- these axons project to 1 of 3 locations
- the spinal trigeminal nucleus
of the medulla receives info
similar to that carried by the spinothalamic tract
such as pain & temp sensations
- other axons go to either the chief sensory neucleus in the pons
- these nuclei receive info like that
carried by the dorsal column system
such as touch,vibration & proprioception
- axons frm the 2nd neuron decussate & ascend
to the thalamus along the
trigemiothalamic tract
- in the thalamus,
each axon synapses with the 3rd neuron
in it's respective pathway
- axons frm the 3rd neuron
then project frm the thalamus
to the primary somatosensory cortex
of the cerebrum
- or the mesencephalic nuclei
in the midbrain
- the sensory pathways of trigeminal pathway
each involve 3 successive pathways
- carries somatosensory information
frm the
head
mouth &
nasal cavity
