Problem: Waste recycling
Many households/ individuals do not re-use and appropriately recycle materials, which cause pollution in the marine environment. Waste are transported from land to the marine environment by winds, storms, sewage systems, through landfills in underground water and by littering
(Reisser, Shaw, Wilcox et al., 2013). #
Plastic
Australians create 660 thousand tonnes
of plastic waste (Same-Day Rubbish Removal, 2019). #

What to do
-
Avoid single use plastics and re-use materials (Huntchinson, n.d.).
Implement a container
deposit scheme in Western Australia cities/ towns
(Same Day Rubbish Removal, 2019).
Know what to recycle and recycle properly (Hutchinson, n.d.).
Spread the word and participate in clean-up days (Hutchinson, n.d.).
-
-
Implement reverse vending machines for glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans (Tomara, n.d.).
20 percent of a households
plastic waste is recycled
(Same-Day Rubbish Removal, n.d.).
A study found that waters around Arustralia are mostly infested with small particles of plastic, which means the degradation of larger pieces of plastic
(Reisser, Shaw, Wilcox et al., 2013).
High demands in plastic production (Hutchinson, n.d.).
Inadequate waste management (Hutchinson, n.d.). # # #
Low levels of recycling (Hutchinson, n.d.). # # #

and cans are used in Australia
every year (Same-Day Rubbish Removal, 2019).

After kerbside collection. Recycled
materials are transported to a
Recycle Material Facility [RMF] in Perth
(City of Busselton Geographe Bay, n.d.).
The distance between Busselton's
Waste Transfer and Perth MRF is 249Km.
(Bing maps, n.d.).
-
At the RMF recyclable materials are sorted.
The materials first go through a cylinder to separate cardboard. Next, the rest of recyclable materials will be transferred via a conveyor belt to a sorting station, where glass will be collected. Recyclable plastic will then be sorted at the next sorting station and lastly cans
City of Busselton Geographe Bay, n.d.).
Advantages of recycling include less waste will be sent to landfill, less carbon dioxide emissions and a lower risk of pollution in the land and marine environment.
-
Recyclable plastics are bailed
for construction of new products
City of Busselton Geographe Bay, n.d.).
Shipped to China for re-manufacturing of new products (City of Busselton Geographe Bay, n.d.).
Glass are crushed and used locally in the construction of roads (City of Busselton Geographe Bay, n.d.).
The RMF in Perth is not operational
due to fire damage (Cleanaway, 2020).
