Child's motor ability, play behaviour, lang dev. Purpose of observing play: gauge cognitive ability, lvl of representational thought--> readiness for symbolic lang.
Types of play
Representational (Dramatic): Pretend play which emerges when child uses familiar objects in appropriate ways to represent world. Eg. cooking toys
Symbolic play: Pretend play where child uses one object to represent another eg. hairbrush for mic, towel for cape
Purpose: Infants have early unds of symbolic nature of spoken word --> acoustic seq--> semantic concept in play. Play seq linked to dev of word seq, play contexts where children can produce more complex grammar, play linked to narrative dev.
