Charlie Gordon
Charlie is the protagonist because the entire story revolves around him. It includes flashbacks of his memories and stories specifically about his relationships.
"have dreams and remembir things that happened a long time ago when I was a very littel kid"(Keyes, 15)
"The last time we were here," I said, "I told you I liked you. I should have
trusted myself to say I love you."
Charlie is clearly invested in learning and the author uses direct characterization by having the characters talk about how good and determined charlie is.
"Charlie has a good natcher
and hes intristed and eegerto pleese"(keyes, 6)
Charlie being the narrator really helps the reader understand what Charlie has to struggle through to spell, learn and remember
"Dr. Strauss tolld Prof Nemur somthing I dint understand so wile they was talking I rote down some of the words in my notebook for keeping my progris riports"(keyes, 6)
"I know Charlie is not what you had in mind as the frist of your new breed of intelek coudnt get the word * superman. But most people of his low went" are host and uncoop they are usally dull and apathet** and hard to reach. Charlie has a good natcher and hes intristed and eegerto pleese"(keyes, 6)
Charlie is shown to have an immense amount of work ethic and determination to learn by showing him struggle to write correctly.
Charlie is compassionate and caring and loves those around him which is shown in his actions to help others around him.
"One time when they were in the kitchen and I was in my bed she was crying. I got up to pick her up and hold her to get quiet the way mom does."(keyes, 23)
One internal influence that has affected Charlie throughout the course of this story is his intelligence. As charlie becomes more intelligent he starts to realize that his 'friends' were actually very mean to him and that the world is a mean place. This causes Charlie to start to become less considerate of others.
One external influence that affects Charlie throughout the story is how the other characters treat him. Excluding a select few most of the characters in the story treat Charlie like an entirely different person which isn't anything like the person before the surgery and this changes how Charlie sees other people and the world around him. This causes him to see that not everyone will like him as much as they did before the surgery.
