SYNBIO + NANOTECH #5

APM Possibilities [Drexler, 2013]
- APM will lead to [yet another] reduction in the need to purchase production machinery, + in turn to invest capital in the same
- Benefits may accrue in areas including computing + communications, construction materials, energy, transportation + agriculture
- APM nanofactories should also help to reduce the volume of raw material demand by being able to recycle on demand
- Potential risk: would be substantially easier to create new weapons + quickly + inexpensively produce them at scale
-
Changes in Society?
- In the 1951 film 'The man in the white suit' his suit never gets damaged/stained etc
- He's running away from industry leaders who had realised it was destroying their business, + trade unions who could see it would decimate employment
The Future Potential
- SynBio, 3D printing + nanotech are merging together, which means manufacturing, medicine and media are merging together
- Technologies converge, which causes industries to converge
- Local Digital Manufacturing may one day replace manufacture-and-ship w/ download-and-fabricate, as well as vastly increasing customisation + personalisation
- Far more production materials + production technologies could be organic
- Control of IP and personal production would be extremely difficult
- We would also become highly reliant on the cloud and the power of AI
