2nd Marking Period
''It is a sad and downtrodden Ms. Connor who meets me hours later. She folds my current grades my two fingers. No basketball team for me, because the A in art, so my GPA is a whopping 1.7.'' PG 75. This meant that her grades were very low but the A in art was saving her but she does not have enough to enter the team.
''Hairwomen is torturing us with essays. Do English teachers spend their vacations dreaming up this things.'' PG 84 This meant that Melinda was struggling with the essay. She does not enjoy doing them and this explains her low grade.
'' She says suicide is for cowards. This is an uglynasty Momside. She bought a book about it. Tough love. Sour sugar. Barbed velvet. Silent Talk.'' PG 88. This meant that Melinda's Mom is not very supportive of her. She is annoyed with her instead of helping her.
''She keeps bouncing balls my way, and I keep putting them up-swish, swish, swish. Forty-two shots later my arm wobble and I miss one.'' PG 75. This quote lets us know how good Melinda actually is as basketball. This opens a new opportunity fr Melinda but she chooses to turn it down.
'' Lunch with Heather starts cold. Since winter break, she has been sitting at the fringe of the Martha table and I eat on the other side of her''. PG 88. This quote shows us that Heather hasn't been at her usual self since the Martha incident and this has affected her.
Character
Mr. Neck: Mr. Neck is Melinda's Social Studies teacher in her new school. They had already met and Melinda did not make good first impression with him. We get to know more about his past and where he comes from. His family has lived in the US now over 200 years. They have been in every war and have voted for many different president.
Heather: Melinda met with Heather at the start of the book. Heather is new to the school as well and comes from Ohio. We get to see how Heather is the opposite from Melinda. Heather is really outgoing and wants to be involved in everything she can. She describes Melinda as the girl who made her feel welcome to the school. Melinda feels well to have someone to sit with.
Melinda: Melinda is our main character in the book. She is new to the school and we know that she has problems with her parents at home. She finds confidence in being wit her new friend Heather from Ohio. Melinda is not very good looking and we know that because in Spanish they called her ugly and she has a condition with her lips. She is quiet and prefers not to talk in difficult situations and this shows us that her personality is different than most. She is more timid than others but inside she wants to let all her anger out.
Ms. Connor: Ms. Connor is the P.E teacher for the school. She decides to put Melinda to shoot many times. Melinda surprisingly scored many of the shots. Ms. Connor really wants Melinda in the team. She is eager to get her in the team and she had previously been a champion of a different sport when she was younger.
David Petrakis: David Petrakis is Melinda's lab partner. He is seen as a kid that is never in trouble or any problems. He started a debate with Mr. Neck about how his kid couldn't get a job. They started arguing about who is right but Mr. Neck ended the discussion as things were not going his way. This sparked interest from Melinda and now she will watch him closely.
Figurative Language
Hyperbole: ''I would explain that she couldn't pay me enough to play on her basketball team''. PG 75. This meant that Melinda was not looking for any confrontation or any running or any sweating. She is not looking for any money only no problems.
Personification: ''And bags of potatoes chips vanished, leaving the faint scent of salt to mix with vermilion oil paint and wet clay.'' PG 78.This meant that just as the principle entered the art room everything was cleaned up instantly to make a good impression.
Simile: ''Our art room is blooming lilke a museum full of O'Keeffes, van Goghs and that French guy who painted flowers with tiny dots''.PG 77. This meant that many of the paintings were started to be finished. She is also inferring that the paintings are really nice and that she may be artist one day.
Metaphor: ''Its smells like frog juice, a cross between a nursing home and a potato salad.''PG 81 This meant that the room was not smelling like is supposed to. It smelled bad and the students had a distaste towards its.
Hyperbole: ''I dig the bones out of the trash and bring them to art class.'' This meant he went to look for the bones in the trash t make the memorial but she did not dig them out.
Hyperbole: '' A cartoon thought bubble forms over the heads of everyone in the class.'' PG. 53 This meant that everyone in the class was kind of confused and worried about what the test is about.
Conflicts
''I just do what I'm told. If I felt like talking I would explain that she couldn't pay me enough to play on her basketball team.'' PG 75. This became a problem for Melinda because the teacher wanted her to joining the basketball team but she is to shy to say. They come to a compromise that shell have an A in P.E if she teaches how to throw fouls.
''My parents commanded me to stay after school every day for extra help from teachers. I agreed to stay after school. I hang out in my refurbished closet. It shaping up nicely.'' PG 50, This is a problem for Melinda as her relationship with her parents is not going well. They are fighting each other and are punishing her because of her bad grades.
'' My guidance counsellor calls Mom at the store to pave the way for my report card. Must remembered to send her a thank you note. By the time we eat dinner, the battle is roaring at full pitch.''PG 86 The counsellor of the school met with Melinda's Mom to talk about her grades. Melinda's grades overall had go down so that is becoming a problem.
