SynBio + Nanotech #3
ASIDE: What is Business?
- The transformation, storage, transportation + presentation of physical matter [for economic purposes]
- Has to be some value added there
- Also, the creation, transformation, storage, communication + presentation of info [although this is actually a subset of the above]
- New means of transforming, storing, transporting + presenting physical matter may be crucial for future business
Enter Nanotechnology
- Nanotechnology engineers physical matter on a molecular or atomic scale
- Simply, it's science, engineering and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers
- Two parts to nanotech: nanomaterials [well-formed at a very great level of detail at the atomic level] + the possibility of producing things at that level. They're subtly different
- Nanotech is usually defined as any process that works at a level of precision of between 1 and 100 nanometers [1nm = 1 billionth of a meter]
- Most manufacturing processes don't work on such a small scale
- The term was coined in 1986 by Eric K Drexler for his book 'Engines of Creation' which focused on the potential for atomically precise manufacturing [APM] using "nanomachines"
- He feels the term has been misused: instead of focusing on "nanomachines" it seems we have been focusing on "nanomaterials"
