In 1983, President Nimeiry imposed Sharia Law which,made the south sudan people that were non muslims get punished by the sharia law
The rebels from South Sudan formed the Southern People's Liberation Army (SPLA) for fighting against the the central government in Khartoum because he did all what he wanted to do

In 1988, the SPLA and the Democratic Unionist Party made a a peace plan for the war to stop but it continued into the 1990s with atrocities and human rights abuses occurring on both sides.
