The military government of the Sudan under General Omer Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir has totally dismantled the Sudanese civil society.

CAUSES
The president wanted to take control of the newly-discovered oil fields located on the border region between north and south Sudan.
President Nimeiry violated the agreement by imposing Sharia Law across the nation and abolishing the mostly Christian Southern Sudan Autonomous Region.
In response, rebels from South Sudan formed the Southern Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA), to fight the central government in Khartoum.
The British proposed that South Sudan should be annexed to Northern Sudan or to another East African country, such as Kenya or Uganda.
