How Leaders Give Feedback
TYPES OF FEEDBACK
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
Positive feedback/ response that produces positive feeling and encourages individual.
E.g: "Good job!" or "Keep up the good work!"
CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK
Point out/ Comment on one's behavior in a manner of wanting the individual to improvise.
Perceived as "negative feedback'. Although, if the commentator were to give a feedback in a respectful & elegant manner, it can be seen as 'constructive'
HOW TO GIVE FEEDBACK?
4
BE CONSTRUCTIVE
After giving feedback and receive their response, discuss on how to proceed with the task together in order to improve and attain the standards.
Question them "whats the next step?" and what you can do as their manager to help.
Learn to collaborate with each other.
2
CREATE OPEN DIALOGUE
Create an open dialogue with the individual. Make sure to have a two-way connection with the individual. Instead of stating what has been observed, question them "How do you feel?" or "Tell us from your point of vie, what do you think?"
5
LISTEN WITHOUT INTERRUPTING
Give them space to talk and share.
Don't overwhelm them with your feedback.Giving feedback is not about you wanting to get things off of your mind. It is also about them.
Allow some time for them to process all the feedback and emotions that's on their mind because we don't know what and how they feel.
Be patient and still, listen to what they have to say.
1
BE SPECIFIC
When giving feedback, be specific by giving examples. This is to ensure they know what needs to be improved, If examples aren't given, individuals in training will feel lost and the unwanted behavior might become a habit.
3
BE HONEST YET TACTFUL
It is crucial to be honest to someone when giving feedback. However, this is not a golden ticket to act arrogant and might.
Be professional and try putting yourself in the person receiving the feedback's shoes and imagine how they feel.
Use your ability to empathize with others while being completely honest with them.
