THE CARBON CYCLE
MAIN PROCESSES
Photosynthesis
Captures light energy using pigments like chlorophyll. It converts low energy substances like carbon dioxide and water into high energy carbohydrates which may be converted to proteins and lipids
Respiration
Releases energy captured in photosynthesis which will be used in metabolic processes. Aerobic respiration returns carbon into the atmosphere as CO2
Food webs
Plants produce lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, some of which will be eaten by herbivores, who will then be eaten by carnivores
Fossilisation
The incomplete decomposition of dead organic matter in anaerobic conditions. This produces carbon stores such as fossil fuels
