Evaluate research methods used to study the influence of globalization on behavior.
Conclusion
Questionnaires: effective method to measure the behavior, attitudes, preferences, opinions and, intentions of relatively large numbers of participants more cheaply and quickly than other methods.
Natural experiments: allow us to look into globalization by means of outside manipulation which avoid reductionism from the experimenters. They are ethical when carrying out experiments, but hard to control many variables.
Semi-structured interviews: allows participants to express their own views and experiences. Allows for more intimate and personal data collection. Hard to create statistical trends from the data collected by the interviews.
Investing these ideas is not always simple and requires the use of a variety of research methods in order to obtain the most accurate findings as possible with as many conditions as possible.
Studying the role of globalization in people's views of other cultures and ideas is important to assess the origin of things such as stereotypes and prejudices.
Body Paragraph 1
Definition of prejudice and stereotype. Connection to globalization: when people lack global influences they are more likely to adhere to stereotypes and have prejudices against other cultures.
The study of globalization is important in relation to behavior because some argue that globalization has exacerbated problems such as unemployment, inequality and poverty, while others contend that globalization helps to reduce them. For this reason, studying the true effects of globalization on behavior is necessary.
Illustration: acculturation and how it plays a role in a person's behavior when they are influenced by different cultures.
Definition of globalization and what it consists of.
Body Paragraph 2
Relevant limitations of questionnaires: participant bias - people may answer in a way they think will look good to the researcher. Options are sometimes limited and don't entirely reflect participants. Low internal validity.
Transition: studies like Novotny and Polonsky bring up issues surrounding the ways in which people are taught about minority groups and cultures in society (or the lack there of). The need for stronger research methods arises.
Relevant merits of questionnaires: easy way to gather and generate data. Can show statistical trends. They are convenient for researcher to use.
Define what a questionnaire is and outline the aim, sample, procedure, and findings of Novotny and Polonsky's study (2011). A study about Intergroup Contact Theory and tested how intergroup contact would affect one's attitude toward immigrants / minorities.
Body Paragraph 3
Relevant merits of natural experiments: reflects real life - high ecological validity. Prevents demand characteristics because participants may not be aware of study. Avoids reductionism. Combination of natural experiment and semi-structured interview allows for both quantitative and qualitative data.
Relevant limitations of natural experiments: lack of control and manipulation - low internal validity. Difficult to replicate for reliability. Situational variables are hard to control.
Definition of natural experiment as well as semi-structured interview (the study includes a combination of both. Provide description (aim, sample, procedure, and findings) of Becker study (2002).
Introduction
Importance of the question to psychology
Studying globalization is important to psychology because as it allows researchers to assess how influences from global cultures can alter a person's behavior
When studying the connection between globalization and behavior, psychologists use many different research methods for ethical reasons and also to increase the validity and accuracy of findings through triangulation.
The goal of psychology is to improve the lives of people individually and collectively.
Outline over essay
The essay will discuss the importance of globalization in relation to human behavior and will evaluate the following research methods to study their connection:
Semi-structured interview
Natural experiment
Questionnaire
