SECI - Nonaka + Takeuchi
- The SECI Model of Knowledge Dimensions is a model of knowledge creation that explains how tacit + explicit knowledge are converted into organisational knowledge
- Distinguishes 4 knowledge dimensions: socialisation, internalisation, externalisation + combination
- Tacit to Tacit: [Socialisation]: explains social interaction as a tacit-to-tacit knowledge transfer; sharing tacit knowledge face-to-face or through experiences
E.g face-to-face meeting; synchronous communication; groupware applications; communities of practice; software; meetings + brainstorms
- Tacit to Explicit [Externalisation]: publishing/articulating knowledge
E.g concepts, images + written documents; collaboration systems; online discussion databases; answering questions
- Explicit to Explicit [Combination]: combining different types of explicit knowledge e.g building prototypes. Collected from inside or outside the organisation + then combined, edited or processed to form new knowledge
E.g all technologies including meeting, email, document, collaboration, knowledge repositories
- Explicit to Tacit [Internalisation]: knowledge receiving + application by an individual; enclosed learning by doing; a process of continuous individual + collective reflection
