Hyperbole
An example fo a hyperbole from the book is" I pull my lower lip all the way in between my teeth. If I try hard enough maybe I can gobble my whole self this way."(pg.39) This is an example of a hyperbole because she's exaggerating that she can gobble herself all up when she can't and when it is impossible. The reason that she says this is because she is so ashamed that she exaggerates herself getting gobbled so that nobody can see her.
Personification
An example of a figurative language in the book is "Winetr calls for Fair Isle sweaters, lined wool pants, and Christmas hair ornaments." (pg. 42)This is an example of a personification because the author is giving a human feature to winter saying that it calls Christmas hair ornaments, lined wool pants, and fair isle sweaters, when winter can't speak and much less tell those things to come.
Similie
An example from the book for a simile is "The girl behind me jams her knees into my back, they are as sharp as her fingernails." (pg.29) This is an example of a simile because Melinda is comparing the girls knees to very sharp fingernails. This is also a simile because in the sentence they use the word as and in similes you compare two things using as or like.
Metaphor
An example of a metaphor from the book is "I stand in the center aisle of the auditorium, a wounded zebra in a National Geographic special, looking for someone, anyone to sit next to. (pg.5) This is a metaphor because the author is comparing Melinda to a wounded zebra. He is comparing two things without using like or ass.
Onomatopeya
An example of a onomatopeya in the book is "Clink, Clink, Clink, he drops ice cubes in a heavy-bottomed glass and pours in some bous."(pg.16) This Is an example on onomatopeya because they are using the sound clink clink to get a literature effect of what Melinda can hear.
Important Quotes
A quote from the book is "I see It in the hallway. It goes to Merryweather. It is walking with Aubrey Cheerleader. It is my nightmare and I can't wake up. It sees me.It smiles and winks."(pg.45-46) This quote reveals that Melinda is scared of It. It is a certain person which we don't know yet. In this quote she is saying that she saw it at her school, she is very scared of that mysterious person.
Another quote from the book is "If there is anyone in the entire galaxy I am dying to tell what really happened it's, Rachel. My throat burns."(pg. 5) In this quote Melinda sees Rachel the first day of school, she wants to talk to her, but Rachel hates her. This reveals that Melinda really wants to be good with Rachel and that she wants to be her friend again. Even though Melinda wants this Rachel hates her.
Another quote is " How can you say that? Why does everyone has that attitude? I don't understand if we want to be in the musical then they should let us."(pg.34) This quote shows us that Heather thinks different than other people. After Melinda tells her that the can't join the musical because they are nobody , Heather tells her and asks her why she said that. This shows that Heather is not the same as the others and she doesn't think what others think. She does stand up for what she wants not like Melinda.
Lastly, a quote from the book is "I used to be like Heather. Have I changed that much in two months? She is happy, driven, aerobically fit."(pg.24) This quote shows that Melinda used to be happy and driven a few months ago but after what happened she is sad and depressed and she has changed a lot. This reveals something about Melinda and how she has changed over time.
