Family Diversity
Postmodernism
David Cheal
Family structures are fragmented and individuals have much more choice in their lifestyles, personal relationships and family arrangements.
Negotiated families do not conform to the traditional norm, but vary according to the wishes and expectations of their members who decide what is best for themselves by negotiation.
Beck; in postmodern society, we live in a 'risk society'.
Giddens and Beck; individualisation thesis - the increasing individual choice upon types of families and relationships.
Living in a 'risk society' has led to a new type of family replacing the traditional nuclear family, known as the negotiated family.
A 'risk society' is where tradition does not play as much of an importance, which means we have more choice which could create instability.
Individualisation thesis argues that traditional social structures like gender, class and family have lost much of their influence on us.
Giddens; what holds relationships today is no longer law, religion or social norms, instead it is intimate relationships and how they are based on individual choice and equality.
Giddens calls this the 'pure relationship' - it exists solely to satisfy each others needs, not to satisfy religion etc.
