Pathogens

Life cycle of a virus
-
- Virus injects material into cell and takes over cell.
- Cell becomes a factory producing hundreds of new viruses.
4.Cell bursts, releasing viruses.
Are viruses alive?
Yes: When they infect a host cell it becomes their own in a way. Being able to take energy from other living things is an adaptation, not a sign of not living.
No: They don't have cells, only hijack others. They lack the structures and mechanisms to support themselves.
The Immune System
Eyes produce salty tears which kill pathogens, stomach acid kills pathogens

Organ Donation
Organ donation is the donation of tissue or an organ of the human body from a living or dead person to a living recipient in need of a transplant
People are vulnerable to infections after surgery because the first line of defence, skin, is broken.
To try and stop rejection of and organ doctors match donor organs to patients and use drugs to suppress the host immune system after transplant.
White blood cells engulf and consume pathogens, and also produce chemicals (antibodies) that kill pathogens.
Vaccines
-
A vaccine protects against one disease, however you do get injections that include more than one vaccine.
