Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Theories
Physiological Needs
Deal with maintenance of human body
example: air, food, water and shelter
most instructive need because the basic need for human to survive
In term of sport psychology: By understanding the basic need of athlete such as foods and rest ----contribute in a better manner.
Example 2: give sufficient rest and sleep to athlete, contribute to perform and function well.
Example 1: Energizing foods can fulfill the athlete and keep them strengthened. A participant would also require sufficient amounts of liquids (e.g. water, sports drinks) to keep them hydrated and healthy
Safety Needs
about keeping us from harm. example: security, health, safe environment
in term of sport psychology: the ability to feel safe, protected and stable in the physical and interpersonal events that come across when participating.
example 1: Having rules, organisation and important figures in the sport that you participate in omits a feeling of security and so the athlete feels more comfortable participating and can feel more confident in doing so .
example 2: KBS plays significant roles in term of safe environment of athlete such as appropriate training rooms, medical checkup of athlete
Belonging and Love Needs
the need for belonging, love and affections as well as for relationship with family, friends and companionship
Example: In sport, particularly in team sports, players need to feel a sense of belonging within the team. They want to feel like a well contributing stakeholder with their coaches and their sporting community.
A participant needs to be able to trust others to ensure they achieve a common goal. Feeling as though they are an asset can ensure the participating begins or continues. Being congratulated and encouraged can guarantee that the social level is reached
Cognitive Needs
desire to know, understand, and solve problems. People with strong cognitive needs are often described as curious and inquisitive.
Example: desire of an athletes in understanding the procedure, rules and others. explore and desire new experiences
example: increase intelligence and gain knowledge to gain better understanding
(athletes compete with new competitor)
Esteem Needs
Esteem is necessary for self-actualization. Self-confidence and acceptance from others are important components of this need.
Example: athlete require respect, admiration and recognition to boost their feeling of esteem
because: being respected by friends, coaches, teammates and the on looking audience can truly enhance the esteem of the participant and guarantee whether they continue on in that sport.
Aesthetics Needs
These needs involve beauty and aesthetically pleasing experiences.
example: for gymnastics, by performing the artistic performance, it indicates how the athletes satisfied in pleasing experiences
it view on how the athletes perception in term of appreciation
and to refresh in certain point
Self Actualization
the ability to meet one’s true potential, and the necessary components of self-actualization vary from person to person.
Example: In sport it involves how the athlete (personal role) in addressing issues of inequity in sport and exercise.
Example: athlete perform well in competition even did not win ----- but achieve the self actualization (because they know their own potential)
Transcendence
helping others to achieve self-actualization
example: athletes encourage their own teammate by giving morale support, sharing motivation.
Maslow's theory has been elaborated upon by other researchers
Maslow's five stages ---- has been adapted and analyzed
