Adult Chronic Wasting= Poor BCS
What= poor BCS, high culling rate, poor repro performance, poor prod, other syndromes (resp, abortions/ poor-doing labs, abscessation)
Inadequate nutrition
Poor consumption
Any condition affecting the animals ability to obtain/ use food
Drenching gun injuries, tooth abnormalities, contagious ecthyma (Scabby Mouth), tooth abnormalities, grass seeds, Dermatophilus, Actinobacillosis (Leather skin),
A. lignieresi
i (skin abscess on face), Blindness, Locomotor problems
Poor provision
Complete food deprivation
Malnutrition
Co/Cu/Se def
Hypovit A
Parasitic
Reduce food intake from nematode/ Liver fluke infection
Bacterial
1. Ovine Johne's Disease (OJD):
Paratuberculosis
NOT NOTIFIABLE IN WA
Cause:
Mycobacterium avium
subspecies
paratuberculosis
slow growing, need 12 wks for primary isolation
LOTS OF SHEDDING
1. C-strain
: mainly cattle (get diarrhoea)
2. S- strain:
mainly sheep (dont get diarrhoea)
HUGE PRODUCTION LOSS
13 mnths in env, ingested with pasture, lambs infected from milk/ intrauterine.
CS
Chronic weight loss
, ill thrift- not responding to worm Tx
Often older
Bottle Jaw
Emaciation- death
Dx
PM-best (histopath of SI, SEE bright golden mucosa
), culture, blood, faecal, burgical biopsy.
Doesn't grow well on most media, need a combination of tests and need to repeat
Eradication/Mx
1. Eradication=
evacuate farm for 2yrs.
2. Control OJD: Vacc
3. Do nothing:
consider neighbouring farm, legal ramifications (trade etc), stock sales, exporting, sell farm?
VACC
Gudair vaccin
e (use controlled, lifelong, lump at injection site)
EXCELLENT= can eradicate BUT $$$, special ear tags, cant export anything- semen etc
2. Caseous Lymphadenitis
(CLA)
ddx: Truperella pyogenes
Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis
in env for a long time
CS
LN: prescapular, auricular, mediastinal though also
ANYWHERE ON BOD
Y
Initially:
see abscesses on face of sheep (
lance it, then after mnths= sheep losing weight)**
"Sitting disease,"
Cut Onion abscess
Dx
Culture (ddx from Trupuerlla)
Tx
Lance ripe abscesses aseptically
Remove all pus-
stop env contamination
Disinfect
pus capsule
AB not effective
Vacc:
Glanvac 6 in 1
(once established need to vacc every 3 mnths= TAKES 2 YEARS TO ERADICATE)
Px: once a year
EASIEST TO TX
3. Tuberculosis (goats):
reportable (exotic to Aust)
Viral
1. Ovine Progressive Pneumonia (Maedi-Visna)
Exotic to Aust
Unlikely if <3-4yo
CS: Loss of condition + dyspnoea (resp condition)
aka
Chasing Disease
(drop dead when chase- cant breathe)
PM: hyperaemia, petechiae, See pneumonia (50% collapsed)
Dx: Wheelbarrow test
(coughing when light- fluid accumulates in areas of lung that work until they cant work anymore= cough)
Tx: hopeless
Px: Screen newcomers
TEST AND CULL
2. Caprine arthritis- encephalitis
: weight loss in adult goats
CS
<10% show CS
5 Syndromes
Big Knee (Polyarthritis/synovitis)
Mammary gland: hard udder (no milk)
Chronic Interstitial pneumonia
Weight loss (chronic)
N. disease (leucoencephalomyelitis, ascending paralysis, coma, death)
Dx
Serological surveillance
(ELISA, PCR, AGID)
AB on serology=
been infected/ maternal AB from colostrum BUT AB not protective (
hides in T-ce
lls)
No AB= not infected/ recently infected (can take 13wks) RETEST in 4-6 mnths
Tx
Px
heat, detergents, formaldehyde
Control: t
est yearly (and cull)
, follow biosecurity
Retest if negative
Separate into seropositive and negative groups
On farm: milk replacement
, colostrum bought in/ heat treated, remove at birth)
3. Contagious ecthyma (Scabby mouth)
: mouth lesions- unwilling to graze
4. Blue tongue:
exotic to Aust, survivors emaciated
Misc
Poisonous plants
Hepatotoxic plants (lantana, Phompsin)
Lupins (chronic lupinosis)
Neoplasia
Small Intestinal carcinoma
SCC
Chronic Facial eczema: Liver damage
Scrapie: exotic to Aust.
Trauma: dog attack (MOST OFTEN)
Border Disease
