Why is there mass hysteria associated with COVID-19?
5 Whys
Because it is a foreign disease
We don't have a vaccine
It is spreading at a high rate
People are at risk
Our leaders cannot protect us
Spiral Dynamics
Beige- at first alert to confirmed cases stock up heavily on all essentials because they are 'just trying to survive'
Green- worry about how this will affect the community as a whole- how to protect everyone
Blue- cannot understand the 'meaning' of the virus wreaking havoc
Orange- worry that they will have to ration supplies and share with the group to survive- worry about competition related to health care treatment if needed
CLA Worldviews (NBA perspective)
Traditional- If our players show signs of flu we will test them, otherwise if they appear healthy they should be 'ok'
Integral- All remaining games of the 2020 season will be canceled to reduce all risk to players and fans of the NBA community
Postmodern- We will screen all players daily and those showing symptoms or risk will not play for the remainder of the season. Games will be rescheduled and only be played in states that have no cases of the virus
Modern- We will cancel games in 'heavy' outbreak areas of the United States to remain profitable but increase the safety of our players and fans
Presencing (from a small business perspective)
Presencing- I can sense that everyone is scared; I will make sure to take all heath care precautions to ensure safety to my best ability
Sensing- Customers will begin to stay at home out of fear they will catch the virus here at the business
Seeing- Economy is taking a hit, how will this affect my business?
Co-creation- state of the art hygiene initiatives will be implemented in accordance with ongoing CDC initiatives
Visualization
People are visualizing the worst outcomes imaginable
People see what is happening in Italy/China and believe they are just as vulnerable
People are caught up with how the Media has visualized the outbreak
People start mentally visualizing what it is they need/can't live without, leading to panic
