C10: Organic Chemistry
Reactions of the Alkenes
-
-
-
The reaction of one member of the homologous
series is the same as the rest
- i.e pentene will react with bromine water the same way decene will
Reacting an alkene with a hydrogen molecule will form an alkane
- This reaction takes place at 60°C in the presence of a nickel catalyst
- This is used to increase the melting points of unsaturated oils e.g. margarine
Reacting an alkene with steam creates an alcohol
- Reversible reaction
- Catalyst required
