As Huck pretends to be Tom and Tom goes by Sid, the two stay at the Phelps' farm. For some reason which Huck knows not, because Tom has been well educated, Tom agrees to help Huck set Jim free. Jim is locked up in a shed, from which he could probably easily escape. However, Tom decides that an elaborate plan, full of excruciating work and spiders and tricks on the Phelps family, is the better way to break Jim out, as it creates more of an adventure. Eventually, the plot goes too far, and Tom is shot. When Tom returns and hears that Jim will now be sent back to slavery, he reveals that Jim has been free for months, as Miss Watson set him free in her will and she had died several months ago.
