Qualifications

Qualifications to become a judge are based on legal qualifications plus relevant legal experience for a number of years.
Selection
Up to 2005, selection of superior judges was done by the Lord Chancellor. This is no longer the case because it was very secretive and political, it was not independent from political influence.
The system was changed by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005 which established the Judicial Appointments Commission to deal with the selection of judges.
Appointment
Once a candidate has been selected the appointment is made by the queen. This keeps selection and appointment separate from the government
