Elderly Male with Stomach Cancer with feeding tube inserted into alimentary canal
Anatomy of the digestive tract- all organs & special structures involved in digestion including the sections of the stomach, small intestine & colon:
Oral Cavity:
Teeth, Salivary Glands
Tongue
Pharynx
Esophagus
Stomach:
Cardiac Sphincter
Cardiac Region
Pyloric Sphincter

The basic nutrients needed by the human body:
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids
Minerals
Vitamins
Water
The physiology of each organ- what it does to help with physical & chemical digestion & absorption of nutrients:
Salivary Glands:
Facilitate speech, mastication and swallowing, and initiate food digestion;
Chemical Digestion
Teeth:
Help in grinding, nipping or tearing of food;
Mechanical Digestion
Pharynx:
Receives food and air from the mouth, and air from the nasal cavities. When food enters the pharynx, involuntary muscle contractions close off the air passageways;
Mechanical Digestion

Salivary Glands:
Salivary Amylase
Stomach:
Pepsin
HCL

Elderly Man= Older Age
Feeding tubes may be prone to biofilms or build up of bacteria
If that were to happen, his immune system isn't as strong to combat a bacterial infection since he's elderly & already has stomach cancer too
Chemotherapy
Radiation
Indicate how this will impact the food he can be given:
His intake will be liquid & nutrient rich like Jevity which will keep him from developing malnutrition
He won't get as many nutrients or quantity of nutrients as he once did when eating a meal
Won't be able to eat solid food:
Increases chance of aspiration or choking
Could lead to a decrease of Vitamin B-12 & Potassium in the diet; since those are essential vitamins that are found in food
What specifically will need to be provided in his feeding tube for him to adequately get the nutrients he needs? Explain:
Basic Nutrients the Human Body Needs:
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Fats
Vitamins
Water
Lipids
Feeding tube allows the patient will to absorb & digest nutrients without difficulty. The goal is to provide the entire spectrum of macro- and micro-nutrients necessary for human nutrition.

Not able to occur in Digestive System:
The body isn't able to use the enzymes it was once able to produce when ingesting his food due to the feeding tube bypassing those organs
