The League of Nations and the creation of the UN {Period 7: 1890-1945}
Established at the end of WWI as an International peacekeeping organization
Woodrow Wilson encouraged the formation of the League of Nations, but the US did not officially join due to opposition from Isolationists
Wilson's 14 points were about a comprehensive vision for the transformation of the world of politics, llaying a foundation for the league of nations
senators Borah and Lodge were extremely opposed to the US having to be committed to defend other nations as members of the league; refused to ratify and US never became a member
League was liquidated in 1946 for the purpose of creating a successor organization, the United Nations. The United Nations is significantly stronger and has much more involvement
League of Nations solved some problems, but failed to prevent the second World War
weak organization and many countries were not members and did not respect their rules.
First World War most destructive in human history
trench warfare
weapons for mass slaughter
European alliance system contributed greatly to the start of the war
After the war, it was realized that something needed to change in world relations
League of Nations established at the same time as the Treaty of Versailles in 1919
consisted of Great Britain, France, Japan, and Italy (Soviet union joined letter and then was expelled when they invaded Finland in 1939)
