First Marking Period
-
Similie: Nicole is unstoppable at field hockey. She motors downfield do fast she creates a wake of flowing mud that washes over anyone who gets in her way.(Page 19, paragraph 1). This similie is comparing Nicole to a motor when she's playing field hockey with Melinda in PE.
Metaphor: I dive into the stream of fourth-period lunch students and swim down the hall to the cafeteria.(Page 7, paragraph 4). This metaphor is expressing when Melinda is going to lunch, except she says it in the way that she's just going with the flow of everyone else and the huge groups going to the cafeteria.
Personification: The school bus wheezes to my corner. (Page 3, paragraph 2. Speak By: Laurie Halse Anderson) This figurative language means that on the way to pick Melinda up to go to school, the school bus made sounds and treaded to her corner.
Alliteration: She is bursting with Merryweather Pride, all perk and pep and purple.(Page 26, paragraph 4) Here Melinda repeats the use of the letter P a lot to describe how heather looked at the fottball team's pep rally.
Nicole is a very fit athlete. She plays many sports and is on the soccer team. She used to be Melinda's friend. Since Melinda describes Nicole as so nice you can't hate her, she doesn't hate Nicole like the other girls. Nicole makes a small connection to Heather in PE when she beggins to show everyone how good she is at basketball and even encourages her to try out for the team.
When Melinda meats Heather she notices she has around five thousand dollars worth of orthodontia. Heather is Melinda's best and only friend. She is new and she is from Ohio. Heather doesn't like to be an outcast, so she does everything to try and be popular as other kids. She tries to join a group called The Marthas. She is fairly self-centered and has the opposite personality from Melinda's.
Rachel is Melinda's old friend. In the beginning, she was a calm girl, however, she saw the exchange students. She decided to follow her European heritage. She stopped shaving and started to hang out with the foreign students. She is very mean and cruel and has even told Melinda she hates her.
Mr Neck is Melinda's Social Studies teacher. He is descriped as "gray jock buzz cut, whistle around a neck thicker than his head...", probably an Iraq or Vietnam veteran. From the beginning he is proven to be biased against Melinda simply for her apperance, as he later states "I got my eye on you. Front row."
"Aren't you the one who called the cops at Kyle Rodger's party at the end of the summer?"-Girl in the pep rally to Melinda (Page 27) This information is important because we know everyone hates Melinda for the cops at the summer party. Even people she doesn't know.
"The First Ten Lies They Tell You In Highschool: 1. We are here to help you 2. You will have enough time to get to your class before the bell rings 3. The dress code will be enforced 4. No smoking allowed on school grounds 5. Our football team will win the championship this year. 6. We expect more of you here 7. Guidance counslers are always available to listen 8. Your schedule was created with your needs in mind 9. Your locker combination is private 10. These will be the years you look back on fondly."-Melinda (Page 5-6) This is Melinda saying how she knows these are lies told to her and to the rest of the students.
"I knew you were trouble the first time I saw you. I've taught here for twenty-four years and I can tell what's going on in a kid's head just by looking in their eyes. No more warnings. you just earned a demerit for wandering the halls without a pass."-Mr. Neck (Page 9)
Mr. Neck has proven to be very mean and biased against Melinda and claiming to know what she's thinking by just looking at her. He thinks he can judge her by her appearance and it's barely the first day of school. This gives us a small sneak peek of how the year will go for Melinda as Mr. Neck as a teacher.
“Why is it so hard to make friends here? Is there something in the water? in my old school, I could have gone out for the musical and worked on the newspaper and chaired the car wash. here people don't even know I exist. I get squished in the hall and I don't belong anywhere and nobody cares. And you're no help. You are so negative and you never try anything, you just mope around like you don't care that people talk about you behind your back .”-Heather (Page 34) This quote is very important to know what Heather really thinks. She says this to Melinda right in her face. It's what she really thinks and how she hates to be an outcast, and how she despises it when Melinda doesn't try things and people don't notice her. Here we can see a bit of her selfishness.
Conflicts
Rachelle: [Snorts. Stand back from mirror, turns head from side to side to admire the black mess that looks like goose poop across her cheekbones]"Pas mal."(Page 21)
The problem is that Rachel/Rachelle used to be Melinda's best friend. Now she's mean to her and treats her like trash when she sees her. She even curses her in french. She hates Melinda but we don't know why. We just know Mel wants to tell her something very badly, but she can't. From this we can inference that calling the cops wasn't the only thing that happened during the summer party.
"My brother got arrested at that party. He got fired because of his arrest. Ican't belive you did that. Asshole." (Page 28)
In the pep rally a girl finds out that mel is Melinda Sordino. She tells her that what she did got her borther arrested. This is just one example of the many people who know who she is and what she's done. This quote gives us information that it isn't only people from her grade or her ex-best friends; it's the whole school who hates her for calling the cops on a party.
Siobhan is part of the Martha's clan. Since Heather is trying to become a member of the group she must prove herself to the girls. Melinda wants to help Heather, so she decides to help decorate the room. She then realizes the problem. The Martha's think she's weird, creepy and ugly. As a reader, it shows us people don't like her at all and they all have rude opinions about her.
Siobhan: "She's creepy. What's wrong with her lips? It looks like she's got a disease or something."(Page 45)
