Disclosure + barring service checks
An employer can request a DBS check for role which may involve working in a health, child and social care environment.
for instance, DBS applicants must be aged 16 or over, can take up to 8 weeks to complete.
DBS check process.
Step 1
Employer gets application from DBS or from organisation which is registered to access DBS checks.
Step 2
Employer gives application form to applicant to fill in + return with documents that prove their identity.
Step 3
Employer gives completed form to DBS or the registered organisation.
Step 4
DBS sends certificate to applicant, employer has to ask applicant to see this.
Step 5
Employer can check status of DBS certificate online.
DBS checks do not have an expiry date. Can be updated + checked when required by employers.
Three types of DBS checks
Standard
Checks for spent + unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings.
Enhanced
Same as standard check + additional information held by local police which is considered relevant to role being applied for.
Enhanced with list checks
Same as enhanced check + check of DBS barred lists.
