Basics
Prevalence increased rapidly over last half century, first inlcuded in the DSM-IV
Three main types
Bulimia
: Dieting followed by out of control binge eating followed by purging food (vomiting, etc.)
Anorexia
: Food intake cut down dramatically, dangerously low body weight
Binge-eating disorder
: Binge eating NOT followed by purging
Bulimia and anorexia common in young women in developed countries due to societal standards of what a body should be
Can result in death if not treated
Causes
Biological/genetic vulnerabilities

psychological factors
(low self-esteem, etc.),
distorted body image
, and more
Treatments
Psychosocial treatments mostly, CBT, family therapy, etc.
Drug treatment not as affective
Sleep-wake disorders (summary)
Types
Dyssomnia
: Disturbance of sleep
insomnia
: Inability to initiate sleep, problems maintaining sleep, failure to feel refreshed after a full night's sleep
Hypersomnolence
: Excessive sleep
Narcolepsy
: Sudden and irresistible sleep attacks
Circadian Rhythm Disorders
: sleepiness/insomnia due to body's inability to synchronize its sleep patterns with day and night
Breathing-related Disorders
: Physical origin,
sleep apnea
, etc.
Parasomnia
: Abnormal events such as nightmares and sleepwalking that occur during sleep
nightmares occur during REM/dream sleep
sleep terrors/sleepwalking occurs during NREM sleep
Assessing
Polysomnographic evaluation (PSG)
: monitoring heart, muscles, respiration, brain waves, etc.
Sleep Efficiency (SE)
: % of time actually sleeping vs time spent in bed trying to sleep
Treatment
Benzos used for short term of dyssomnias
Possibility of rebound insomnia, withdrawal can cause worse sleep problems once stopped
Psychological interventions: stimulus control and sleep hygiene
