ADTA 5120 W1
B1:Ch1:
-
Data Types
-
continuous, discrete, categorical (includes binary), and ordinal
-
Nonrectangular Data Structures: Time series, Spatial, Graph
Exploring your data:
-
- The estimate of variability: Is the data clustered or spread out
using deviation, variance, SD (s for sample'n-1', sigma population 'n'), Range & percentile, IQR
measure it, reduce it, distinguish if it is real and its sources, and how to make decisions in its presence
-
-
-
- Explore the data Distribution: Boxplot, frequency tables, Histogram, Density plot, 5 number summary
- Explore Binary & Categorical Data: simple proportions or percentages tell the story of the data. Mode, expected valye, bar chart, pie chart
- Correlation: Pearson's coefficient, matrix, scatterplot. Spearman’s or Kendall’s are correlation coefficients based on the rank of the data not value.
Exploring 2 or more variables: Contingency tables, Hexagonal binning, contour plots, violin plot
Personal Notes:
Stat is super easy to apply using software. The trick is to understand why you are doing this. We will not use the math behind any stat. But try to use the code or do the process on SPSS from each tool
