FIBROMA
DEFINITION
• A benign tumour of fibrous connective tissue
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
• Uncontrolled cell division occurs
• Over unknown cause.
• Or as result of injury or local irritability
• Tumour-like growth consisting of fibrous tissue
CAUSES
• Exact Cause unknown
• Genetic
• Certain medication eg beta-blockers
RISK FACTORS
• Family history of fibroma
• Minor skin or foot injury
• Northern European ancestry
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
• Itchiness
• Occasional tenderness
• Lump in the arch of the foot
• Possible bleeding with injury
• Sensitivity of the dermatofibroma to touch
TREATMENT
• Dermatofibroma- harmless treatment not required
• Plantorfibroma- extreme cold, padding, stretching
• Corticosteroids injection
• Surgical removal
PHARMACOLOGY
• Topical ointment- transdermal verapamil gel
• Corticosteroid injection
• orthotics
NURSING CARE PLAN
• Provide accurate information
• Explain the condition and procedures to be done
• Monitor vital signs
• Alleviate stress and anxiety
• Administer medications to allay discomfort
COMPLICATIONS
• Flattening of the arch of the foot
• Postsurgical plantar nerve entrapment
• Postsurgical regrowth of large recurrent fibromas
