B7 - Non-Communicable Diseases
Diseases include:
Diabetes
Cancer; Cells grow and then divide by mitosis only when we need new ones - when we're growing or need to replace old or damaged cells.
When a cell becomes cancerous, it begins to grow and divide uncontrollably. New cells are produced - even if the body does not need them. Cancer cells are undifferentiated - they don't carry out their normal function.
What causes cancer?: There are genetic factors that increase the likelihood of developing some cancers.
A group of cancerous cells produce a growth called a tumor. There are two different types of tumour:
Begin; Grows slowly - usually within a membrane, so it can easily be removed - does not invade other parts of the body
Malignant; Grows quickly - invades neighboring tissues and can spread to other parts of the body in the bloodstream - as the tumor grows, cancer cells detach and can form secondary tumors in other parts of the body - this is called metastasis.
Genetic diseases and conditions
Heart disease
Neurological disorders
Effects on physical and mental health include:
Stress
Diet
Situations that may occur in a persons life
Lifestyle factors such as alcohol and other drugs
Interactions between different types of diseases:
Defects in the immune system mean that an individual is more likley to suffer from infectious diseases. For example human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections, which lead to AIDS, that affect the immune system and lead up to an increase in infectious diseases.
Viruses living in cells can be the trigger for cancers. For example, the majority of cases of cancer of the cervix are linked with a virus present in the female reproductive system.
The reaction of the immune systme to pathogens and other foreign bodies can trigger allergic reactions that lead to skin rashes and asthma. For example, severe respiratory infections in babies can lead to asthma in later childhood. Severe physical ill health can lead to depression and other types of mental illness.
